About

A career built one table at a time

Fourteen years between professional kitchens and private homes, in service of a single idea: that the best meal of your life should happen where you are most comfortable.

Biography

From brigade kitchens to private tables

James Matlhabegoane grew up in a household where Sunday cooking took the whole day, and where the measure of a dish was how long people stayed at the table. He took that instinct into professional kitchens at nineteen and spent the next decade learning to make it repeatable.

After a classical apprenticeship and years on the pass at one of the country's most decorated restaurants, he chose to step away from the dining room. Private work, he found, allowed the thing restaurants rarely can: cooking for people you actually know, in the rooms they live in, with a menu that exists only once.

Today he leads a small, permanent team of chefs and service staff, working across South Africa for private clients, executive hosts and destination celebrations. Menus are developed in consultation, tested in the studio, and cooked in front of you.

“Luxury is not the truffle. It is the sense that everything has been thought about before you arrived.”

Mission

Why we do this

To give South African hosts an alternative to the restaurant booking — a private, world-class table in their own space, where the menu is theirs, the pace is theirs and the evening ends when they decide it does. Every service is an argument that hospitality of this standard belongs at home.
